A question regarding kana to roumaji transliteration

The problem with this discussion though is that katakana is usually used for foreign loan words, so they already have a one and only correct spelling. It's "party", not "paatii" or some other variant. For the names and the like, the correct way High Low Schoolfeest Jurken to spell it is however the owner prefers, whether it's correct or not, and that's how you get things like Joe Hisaishi, Masamune Shirow etc. For the rest, you can use whatever romanization you like, and even mix methods.

For the other way around, all that matters it that whatever you Vintage Trouwjurk type in on a computer becomes the Japanese you want. See wapuro romaji.

One final thing - romaji sucks. Instead of worrying about romanization, what system and what's correct, just stick to kana and kanji. Romaji is a crutch and should ideally not be used.

While I agree with yours (and other people's) comment in general, you picked a bad example since it's a name. Osaka is the official English Een Schouder Prom Dresses spelling. At best you could get away with Same goes for certain other Japanese cities such as Kyoto and Tokyo.

That aside I was not aware of Doc Watson original purpose for asking the question - it seemed more like a general question. For the hentai database I'd use the official spellings whenever they're available, and if not just pick a method that's consistent as long as it attempts to write out foreign loanwords as they would be spelled in their original language.
