A question regarding kana to roumaji transliteration Archive

One final thing - romaji sucks. Instead of worrying about romanization, what system and what's correct, just Trouwjurk Lange Mouw stick to kana and kanji. Romaji is a crutch and should ideally not be used.

Since neither I nor the vast majority of my database's users understand Japanese, the crutch is necessary. Ideally all of us would be fluent and literate in several dialects of Nihongo, but that is not the case.

Yeah, Trouwjurken nl it's all well and good to say romaji sucks, and in many ways it totally does. But ditching it is not remotely practical, and I wouldn't even say "ideal" in the vast majority of cases if you're trying to communicate with non-Japanese speakers.

Ditching romaji is something you tell someone to do if they're taking Japanese language instruction. Not if you're just trying to impart information on a subject to people. If I type "Oosaka" or "Osaka", anyone can easily discern what I mean. If I type then I just cut 99% of my readers out of the loop and made my comment next to worthless.

Necessary evils and all that.

While I agree with yours (and other people's) comment in general, you picked a bad example since it's a name. Osaka is the official English spelling. At best you could get away with Same goes for certain other Japanese cities such as Kyoto and Tokyo.

That aside I was not aware of Doc Watson original purpose for asking the question - it seemed more like a general question. For the hentai database I'd use Cocktailjurken 2013 the official spellings whenever they're available, and if not just pick a method that's consistent as long as it attempts to write out foreign loanwords as they would be spelled in their original language.
